About Me

My name is Gabriel Sutherland and I am a Mechanical Engineering student, Deep Reinforcement Learning researcher, amateur astronomer, and UAV enthusiast.

My Experience

From a young age, my gaze has always been drawn upward. What started with amateur astronomy and astrophotography in my backyard has grown into a lifelong passion for the frontier of space. I believe the next great leap for humanity lies in the cosmos, and in utilizing innovations from the final frontier to foster a more sustainable future for our planet. I've dedicated my career to helping solve the complex challenges that will get us there.

This fascination isn't just a hobby, it's the driving force behind my professional mission. That journey from passion to profession began early when I founded DroneON, a startup focused on using UAVs for precision agriculture. Building a company from the ground up didn't just solidify my career path, it gave me the foundational tools I rely on every day: how to lead a collaborative team, tackle ambiguous problems, and turn a bold idea into a tangible reality. Today, my mission is to build the smart, resilient technology that will define the next generation of space exploration. My work lives at the exciting intersection of mechanical engineering and artificial intelligence, where I have had the opportunity to build physical hardware, and intelligent systems for both autonomous spacecraft and improving our scientific understanding of our planet and solar system. My goal is to foster the technology, methodologies, and communities that will make space more accessible and sustainable.

Solving these global challenges requires a global perspective. My Brazilian roots and German education have given me a deep appreciation for collaboration across cultures and disciplines, a skill I value deeply in my work with international teams. This multifaceted worldview is a core part of who I am.

While my work is focused on the final frontier, I find my balance and inspiration here on Earth. When I'm not working, you can find me exploring terrestrial landscapes, whether hiking and running on a trail, skiing down a mountain, or capturing the world through my camera lens. Travel and reading continuously open my mind to new ideas and perspectives, fueling both my personal and professional curiosity. Ultimately, I'm driven by a sense of adventure, whether it's aimed at a distant star or a new trail to explore.

My Skillset

I possess a sharp eye for detail, which I use in designing electrical and mechanical systems. I work well under pressure and can produce high-quality work in short periods of time. I have strong interpersonal skills and work with a wide variety of people.

My Goals

I enjoy opportunities to work with a team that is diverse, and passionate about their work. I want to align myself with a group I believe in and where I can create positive change. I am always looking to learn more and am open to taking on challenging projects.
